Why getting cited now matters more than ranking

Google AI Overviews already appear in roughly 45% of searches and can reduce clicks to websites by up to 58% (industry analyses, 2025–2026). When an AI answers the question directly, the citation inside that answer becomes the new first result. If you're not the cited source, you're invisible — no matter where you rank.

How AI engines choose what to cite

The Princeton "GEO" study (KDD 2024), tested across Perplexity, measured what actually lifts AI visibility. The winners are credibility signals, not keywords:

TacticVisibility liftHow to apply
Expert quotes~ +41%Named source with title
Statistics~ +30–37%Specific numbers + source
Cited references~ +30–40%Link authoritative sources
Keyword stuffing~ −10%Don't — it hurts

One more structural fact: brands are about 6.5× more likely to be cited via third-party sources than from their own domain. Citation is an entity game, not just an on-page one.

The 7-step method to get cited

  1. Lead with the answer. Open every section with a self-contained 40–60 word response. AI lifts passages, not whole pages.
  2. Shape headings as questions. Match how people and AI actually phrase the query, so your section maps to the prompt.
  3. Add proof. Statistics with sources, a named expert quote, a comparison table or numbered steps — the formats AI cites most.
  4. Ship schema. FAQPage, Article and Person JSON-LD so engines resolve your entity and your answers. (See schema markup for AI.)
  5. Publish llms.txt and open the gates. Allow GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended; give AI a clean context file. (See the llms.txt guide.)
  6. Build the entity. Consistent name and profiles, plus third-party mentions (LinkedIn, YouTube, communities, press) so engines corroborate you.
  7. Refresh on a schedule. Show a "last updated" date and revise quarterly — AI weights recency heavily.

How to test whether it's working

Pick 10–20 questions your buyers actually ask. Each month, run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and record: are you cited? Who else is? Which page got pulled? That simple log is your AEO scoreboard — and it tells you which pages to strengthen next.

SEO got you found. AEO gets you quoted. In 2026 you need both.

Frequently asked questions

Can small businesses get cited, or only big brands?

Small businesses can absolutely get cited — sometimes faster, because AI engines reward clear structure and authority over domain size. A focused, well-structured page can beat a big brand's vague one.

Do I need to block AI crawlers to protect my content?

If you block GPTBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot, those engines can't cite you. The usual choice is to allow the search/answer bots and only block training-only crawlers if you wish.

What's the single highest-leverage change?

Rewrite your top pages to lead with a direct, quotable answer in the first paragraph. It's the change that most often turns a page from "ignored" into "cited."
